Do $$$ Effect How We Rate?

I just finished Time Heist by Anthony Vicino. It’s been on my TBR for awhile, and I got it on sale for $0.99 so it was a steal. I like Anthony’s writing, sometimes a bit overelaborate, I’ll give you an example at one point the helicopter thingy (not his words) is crashing and the windshield cracks. This is what Tom the main character thinks Asphyxiation on account of too much air felt too paradoxical a way to die. Though, in the end, I suppose breathing eventually does us all. I was thinking what would have summed it up better? Oh shit. But that’s me, not a writer. And there are times when the clarity of Anthony’s writing is just stunning to me. Tom is addicted to a drug called Quick Sliver. There is a moment when he is detoxing in the middle of the, well everything honestly, and he really doesn’t have time for it (yeah that’s a pun, time) so his partner gives him a hit. It’s then he thinks this...I pitied the living. The dead were my idols. This drug was my god. I read that and thought Anthony you talented s.o.b.

But that’s not what I’m really talking about, what I do want to know is this, I gave this book 4 stars because for $1 it was quite good. In fact if I liked the ending I would have given it 5 stars and written glowing reviews to high heaven everywhere I could think of. But what if the book cost $7 or $8? Now if the ending was different I would have gone with 4 stars, but if not 2-3 stars. And that got me thinking, should my reviews have price factored in? Is that fair, especially if your dealing with a published author who has no control over the price? I do it because I think I was always raised that, the more you pay for it, the higher standard it must adhere to. But is this a proper additude to have in my book reviewing? I’m feel like it’s almost unconscious for me but I’m curious to hear others thoughts on the matter.

The Diabolical Miss Hyde by Viola Carr

This book has been on my TBR forever but for some reason I just never got around to it, that was my loss. I LOVED this book, let me tell you why, but first the blurb:

This book was amazing! It was a steampunk twist on Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde with even a dash of Frankenstein thrown in for good fun. You follow the main characters Eliza and Lizza as they try to solve a murder, escape the Royal enforcers and figure out who they really are. The world build is perfect, I mean spot on, I normally have a hard time with steampunk and honestly sometimes, especially when Eliza was talking it did seem a little verbose but all and all I enjoyed it immensely. The story itself broke a lot of my rules, too many plot lines, too many characters, too much going on but guess what I DIDN’T CARE! Yeah I liked it that much. She even has an adorable little robot Hippocrates who likes to keep things logical thank you. Read it! I’m still on this book high, so I don’t want to talk to much lest I reveal something I shouldn’t.

Book two The Devious Dr. Jekyll just released on October 27th Hyde-2  acquiring now, I’ll let you know what I think of that as well.

Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison

Hey everyone,

Dragon Bound is book #1 of The Elder Races Series.  This world is inhabited by Wyrkind,  Shifters, Elven, Goblins, Witches.  The main male lead, Dragos, is one of the most powerful, ancient of the Wyrkind.  The main female lead, Pia Giovanni, is a half-human, half-wrykind, although she is not aware of what she can shift into.  She had been well-protected by her mother who did not want to encourage her magical side.  Pia was forced to steal from Dragos who did not take  kindly to being stolen from.  He was determined to find Pia and discover how she managed to locate his hoard of possessions.  Battles ensue from there.

I liked this book with a couple of observations.  I think the author has created a very interesting world and did a good amount of world building in this first book. I also for the most part, enjoyed the interactions between Dragos and Pia, especially when he was warning her about what would happen in one of the battles.  He was preparing her because the two of them were going to have a difficult time.  I really liked that he did that and how he did it. However, I felt that the character of Dragos needed to be more developed.  I have been told by others who have read this series that Dragos is more defined as the series goes on.  Secondly, I thought that Pia was a very strong character who called Dragos out on his crap, which I really enjoyed.  However, I did feel she became whiny a couple of times.  In her defense though, she had had a horrible week and anyone would become whiny at her circumstances.  I do plan to continue on with this series in the future.  I think it is worth your time.
